Flora Pettit proudly announces that Jennifer Shirkey has been appointed and sworn in as the Commissioner of Accounts for Harrisonburg and Rockingham County for a four-year term starting January 1, 2025. Jennifer was first appointed as an Assistant Commissioner of Accounts in 2012 and has served in that capacity until now.
Virginia Circuit Courts appoint Commissioners of Accounts to provide general supervision of court-appointed fiduciaries. A Commissioner of Accounts is charged with the responsibility of supervising the timely and proper filing of fiduciary inventories and accounts by administrators and executors of decedents’ estates, trustees of testamentary trusts and court-ordered trusts, guardians of minors, conservators of incapacitated adults, and foreclosure trustees. The Commissioner’s office audits and, if satisfactory, approves the inventories and accounts required to be filed by the various fiduciaries. The Commissioner has the statutory obligation to enforce the timely filing of the required documents and the authority to issue a summons, subpoena duces tecum, or request a show cause order from the Court to ensure that all fiduciary obligations are satisfied. Jennifer is accepting these responsibilities while maintaining a robust private practice of law with Flora Pettit.
